Everything We Know So Far

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Mr. & Mrs. Smith season one.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the steamy spy thriller starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, became something of a pop-culture phenomenon when it originally premiered in 2005. Nearly 20 years later, a TV reboot of the same name was announced but this time with Donald Glover (Atlanta) and Maya Erskine (Pen15) at the helm. The Amazon Prime Video series hit the streamer in February 2024, with Glover acting as the co-creator and executive producer alongside showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane.

While the critically acclaimed remake is poised for Emmy glory, the project did run into a few hiccups ahead of its debut. Before Erskine was cast, British actress and screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge was actually supposed to appear opposite Glover. The Fleabag creator was slated to star as the female lead and co-write the Prime Video adaptation but exited the project in September 2021 citing creative differences. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, she said: “I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it—still care about it. And I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision.”

In season one, Glover and Erskine played the part of a married assassin couple living together under the alias of John and Jane Smith. The show starts out with the spies being recruited by an intelligence agency, Hihi, which ultimately pairs the two together and relocates them to a brownstone in New York City. Unlike the Doug Liman-directed action movie, they’re working for the same team, and we learn there are more John and Jane Smiths out there just like them carrying out high-risk missions in glamorous, far-flung locations across the globe.

After an explosive first season cliffhanger, fans are eager to gather every detail about Mr. & Mrs. Smith…
