Josh Brolin Is Playing a Priest in the New ‘Knives…


Since the third Knives Out movie was announced, the internet has been abuzz about which actors would get cast in the whodunit series—and whom the stars would be playing. For this latest installment, Josh Brolin is joining the ensemble as a character that’s worlds away from Thanos.

During a recent interview with Total Film for Gladiator 2, the 56-year-old Oscar-nominated actor teased his role in director Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which is set to premiere sometime next year on Netflix. “I’m playing a priest,” Brolin tells the magazine. “My wife reminded me . . . She said, ‘Do you remember a year ago you said that you wanted to play a priest? It’s like you manifest this shit.’” 

Brolin was tight-lipped about the storyline, but he did share his thoughts on what it was like working with Johnson and his fellow actors. “Rian is probably my new favorite director,” he says. “It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. Incredible cast.”  

In addition to Brolin, the threequel will have fellow Marvel star Jeremy Renner, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, and Kerry Washington as part of the ensemble. Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, Thomas Haden Church, and Josh O’Connor (Challengers) are also set to star. Interestingly enough, O’Connor will join Brolin in the role of a priest. The British actor was photographed back in June wearing a clergy collar while on set in London. 

Most notably, Daniel Craig will reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc. Fans might be surprised to see Craig’s character, who appeared in both the original and the follow-up whodunnit Glass Onion, rocking a new look for this installment. In a post on X, Johnson shared a black-and-white image of the southern sleuth donning a three-piece suit and a longer hairstyle than usual. Naturally, plot specifics remain under wraps.
